Domestic violence is a serious issue that affects 1 in 3 US women, most of whom suffer silently. Isn’t the number staggering? Well, women who are in between 18 and 24 years of age are usually abused by some of their intimate partners, and 20 people in a minute are physically or sexually abused by their partner in the US.

No matter what circumstances you’re facing, if you think you are a victim of domestic violence, here are some of the immediate steps you should take.

  • Remove yourself from that situation

In any circumstance, if you feel the threat of experiencing any form of domestic abuse, it is vital for you to quietly remove yourself from that situation. In case you also have kids with you, they should also be taken away from that place. Remember that this is the first step that should be taken instantly and silently. Don’t make the abuser aware of the fact that you’re leaving.

  • Inform someone

How about getting in touch with a domestic abuse helpline? You may call 800-799-SAFE, which is the National Domestic Violence Hotline number. You may speak with someone who is trained to give you appropriate advice on the strategies to take. They may also tell you how to find a ladies’ shelter in your locality.

  • Try to document the act of abuse

If you think it’s necessary to file a police report, you should give a proper document of your abuse. Keep a record of all the injuries that you sustained due to the act of domestic violence. You may click photos or try and record the entire abusive act, and keep all the incriminating social media posts, DMs, and text messages.

  • Have a plan B

In case you plan to leave, you should have a solid, full-proof plan B for yourself and for your kids. Start packing your belongings, including cash, clothes, birth certificates, credit cards, driver’s license, passports, medicines, SS cards, medical details, insurance papers, and custody forms. When you’re in immediate danger, call 911 as soon as you can.

Therefore, now that you’re aware of the steps that you should take in order to fight back against domestic violence, follow them whenever you are a victim of it. Get in touch with a Sandy domestic violence lawyer who can guide you on the accurate legal steps to take.
